Ccso Warns Of Purse Thefts, Seeks Leads – Wzvn News For Fort Myers, Cape Coral & Naples, Florida

Cornelia Schaad, 81, was shopping at the Tamiami Trail Winn Dixie in Port Charlotte on Tuesday when she says she was robbed. “They snatched my purse and took off, I couldn’t even begin to get a license number or a description except the vehicle and that was pretty vague,” said Schaad. A late model van or SUV was all she was able to gather. It was gone as quickly as it came. On Wednesday, purse-snatchers struck again in a similar fashion – targeting another woman. It happened in a supermarket parking lot – this time at the Port Charlotte Publix on Cochran Boulevard. The victim in this case was a 61-year-old. The robbers grabbed her purse, which was draped across her body and dragged her until the strap broke. The woman couldn’t identify the car. “I guess it could happen anywhere, but it sure makes you want to be more aware of your surroundings,” said Cheryl Porto, a Publix shopper. After learning of the most recent snatching, Schaad says she feels lucky. “I’m not surprised and yet I am and I feel very bad for the lady that was dragged by a vehicle and I realize how fortunate I was that that didn’t happen to me,” she said. Deputies say the two events may not be related. They’re warning women to be careful when heading from the checkout line to their cars. Detectives request that anyone who may have seen or have information about either incident to please call the Sheriffs Office at (941) 639-2101 (ask for District Investigations), or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
